Fare not fixed — it depends on operator, season and hour, and the ferry ticket may or may not be inside the number you were quoted. On an hour-long run a long negotiated fare is where the surprises are biggest.

The drive

The quickest way to Herceg Novi crosses the narrowest point of the Bay of Kotor on the little Kamenari–Lepetane ferry — a five-minute crossing that’s an attraction in itself, with the mountains rising straight from the water on both sides. The ferry runs around the clock and is included in your fixed price. All in, count on about an hour from the arrivals hall to your hotel door.

If the queue at Kamenari is long on a summer changeover day, your driver simply loops around the inner bay instead — a longer but beautiful alternative past Risan and Perast — at no change to the price.

Guarding the entrance to the bay, Herceg Novi is a town of stairways, fortresses and botanical gardens — Ottoman, Venetian and Austrian walls stacked above a long seafront promenade that stretches to the beaches of Igalo. It gets more sunshine than anywhere else on the bay and makes a relaxed, uncrowded base.

We still recommend leaving early: in summer the Kamenari–Lepetane ferry queue and the bay road can get very crowded.
